Gristwood & Toms, a Nurture Group company, highlights the life-saving power of training and safety with heroic supervisor
20 November 2024

David Harrington, a supervisor with Gristwood & Toms, recently demonstrated exceptional courage, care and skill, turning a potentially tragic incident into a powerful reminder of why training and safety are at the heart of everything we do.
Whilst driving through Waltham Forest, David witnessed an independent contractor fall from a tree due to the absence of climbing ropes and safety equipment, resulting in serious leg injuries. David’s immediate response, guided by his extensive training, prevented the situation from worsening and became a shining example of compassion and professionalism under pressure, exemplifying the importance of health and safety measures in the workplace.
Reflecting on the event, David recalled his initial shock upon seeing the contractor in free fall. "As soon as I saw him falling, I pulled over, secured the site, and went to check on him," shared David.
Calm yet resolute, David’s actions were rooted in the training he had received at Gristwood & Toms, particularly under the expert guidance of Julian Woodall from Medics International.
"The man was shaking, completely overwhelmed, not really knowing what just happened,” David explained. “The first priority was to get him calmed down, turn off all machinery, and make sure the area was safe.”
Quick Thinking and Training in Action
After ensuring all machinery was off, David quickly assessed the extent of the contractor’s injuries before calling the emergency services. He noted the severe trauma to his legs, identifying one leg as badly disfigured and another with serious swelling and instability around the knee. His experience and training enabled him to provide essential first aid, ensuring that the contractor remained still and warm, following all necessary protocols until help arrived. David then relayed detailed information to aid paramedics upon their arrival, emphasising that his training allowed him to remain calm and effectively manage the situation l. “Without the knowledge from Julian at Medics International, I wouldn’t have been able to help him as I did,” he explained.
The experience also tested David’s emotional resilience. The contractor’s groundsman, overwhelmed by the trauma, struggled to cope with the situation. David not only managed the injured contractor’s care but also extended his calm, reassuring presence to the groundsman, helping him process the shock until help arrived nearly an hour and a half later.
Recognition for Exemplary Conduct
Andy Brightman, Managing Director at Gristwood & Toms, praised David’s conduct as a model of its safety-first approach. “There is a moral to this story. Our emphasis on going home safe is why we prioritise proper training and personal protective equipment,” said Brightman. “David’s actions reflect the professionalism and care we strive for across Gristwood & Toms and across the wider Nurture Group.
“David’s selflessness, quick thinking, and commitment to safety are truly inspiring. This incident is a reminder of why investing in thorough training and creating a culture of care and preparedness is so crucial. David’s actions did not just help an injured contractor—they demonstrated the best of what it means to put safety and compassion first.”
