What are the signs of a cockroach infestation?

Being nocturnal, it is often easier to spot the signs of a cockroach infestation than to see the insects themselves, so if you see one there is every chance there are many more. Other signs include small, dark specks resembling coffee grounds where cockroaches frequent, larger cylindrical droppings about the size of a grain of rice. You may also notice egg casings (oothecae), shed skin and an unpleasant odour. Signs of damage to property such as cardboard, book bindings and fabric are other indicators.

Where to look for a cockroach infestation?

Cockroaches prefer dark, warm, and moist environments with easy access to food and water. Often these insects live in dirty, inaccessible areas like drains and ducting, but other common places to check for signs include:

  • Kitchen: under sinks, behind appliances (refrigerator, oven, dishwasher), inside cabinets and pantries, near waste containers.
  • Bathroom: under sinks, behind toilets, inside cabinets, near pipes.
  • Basement and laundry room: near pipes, in cracks and crevices, in storage boxes.
  • Other areas: behind furniture, along skirting boards / covings, inside walls etc.

How can I prevent a cockroach infestation?

To reduce the risk of a cockroach infestation you should look at:

  • Keep pigeons away your building: cockroaches are known to eat pigeon droppings
  • Maintain sanitation: keep premises clean and manage waste, safely store food, and promptly clean up spills.
  • Control moisture levels: address leaks and areas of high humidity, as cockroaches need water to survive.
  • Seal entry points: identify and seal cracks, crevices, and openings in walls, floors, and around pipes to prevent cockroaches from entering.  Thoroughly inspect 2nd hand equipment before bringing it inside
  • Proper storage: store food in airtight containers and avoid clutter that can provide hiding places.

Do cockroach infestations require more than one treatment?

Multiple treatments will be required to fully treat a cockroach infestation depending on the property, size of infestation and environmental factors. Monitoring of the area is advised before and after a treatment so as to determine effectiveness of a treatment and ensure that all nymphs have been removed following hatching from their ootheca. Our technician will advise the treatment and number of visits recommended in every given occurrence.
