Frequently Asked Questions

What areas can your winter gritting services cover?

Our gritting services are tailored to your site, including car park gritting, access roads, walkways, loading bays, and other high-risk areas. We ensure safe, ice-free surfaces so staff, customers, and visitors can move around confidently, whatever the weather.

How do you determine when gritting is needed?

We use postcode-specific Met Office road surface temperature forecasts to activate gritting when conditions meet your agreed trigger point (typically 0°C). This approach ensures treatment is delivered exactly when required, avoiding unnecessary visits and controlling costs.

Can I request additional gritting if my site requires it?

Yes. Whilst gritting is scheduled in advance to ensure your site is treated before frost or ice can form, there may be times where additional gritting will be required if the weather has overtaken the service delivered from the previous evening, or if the forecast was incorrect and gritting was not activated, but unforecasted temperature drops or light snow may necessitate an additional visit.

Can you provide multi-site gritting services?

Absolutely. With over 90 depots nationwide and 750+ specialist vehicles, we’re a gritting company with the scale to support single or multi-site portfolios anywhere in the UK, delivering the same high-quality service to each location.

How do I know my site has been gritted?

All gritting services are fully documented with time-stamped job sheets and GPS-tracked confirmations. These records are available via our Ice Master portal, giving you full transparency and a fully audited trail.

What salt do you use in your gritting services?

We use 100% white marine salt as standard for all winter gritting services. This premium product is less corrosive than brown grit and is preferred by our commercial clients because it:

  • Doesn’t leave dirty marks indoors
  • Dissolves evenly for consistent coverage
  • Is a sustainable choice

Specialist environmentally-friendly alternatives are also available on request for sensitive areas like upper-deck car parks, heritage paving, or mezzanine structures.

Why is salt the preferred method for winter gritting?

Salt is the most widely used and reliable material for preventing ice, which is why it’s the industry standard. At Nurture Winter Gritting, we use 100% white marine salt across our nationwide operations for its proven performance. However, it’s important to understand that no salt can guarantee 100% prevention of ice or snow in all conditions.

How much salt do you apply during a gritting visit?

We calibrate our salt spreaders to deliver 20g–40g per square metre, depending on the weather forecast. In wetter or snowy conditions, higher rates are applied to maintain safety.

How does salt prevent ice from forming?

Salt lowers the freezing point of water, preventing ice from bonding to surfaces. Once it absorbs moisture, it forms a brine that’s more effective when spread under traffic or footfall. The process doesn’t generate heat, so in some circumstances – such as heavy snowfalls or rapid temperature drops – frost or snow may still be present even after gritting.

What areas of our site would you cover?

We will create and agree with the client a ‘gritting plan’. This is a mapped area using our professional mapping software which will visually detail all areas that require service. We will service all hard landscaped areas within the boundaries of the site.

Why can’t I see salt on my site after it has been gritted?

Salt is a natural product, and as it at its most effective when dissolved into a brine solution. This brine solution is much less likely to freeze (depending on temperatures). Therefore, especially in damp or wet conditions, the salt will dissolve more quickly and may not be visible on site the following morning. Additionally, is the salt has been crushed, through vehicle or pedestrian traffic, it will be much less visible, even in drier conditions.

What pricing options are available for winter gritting?

We offer cost-per-visit, fixed-cost, and hybrid 50/50 pricing models, allowing you to select the plan that matches your operational requirements and needs.

Can you provide gritting services outside of standard working hours?

Yes. Most gritting is carried out overnight between 6.00pm and 7.00am, ensuring your site is safe and ready before the working day begins.

How do your teams access my site?

Our operational teams will provide an overnight service between 6.00pm and 7.00am the following morning. If the site is locked during these times, then arrangements must be made for our teams to access the site. You can provide:

  • Keys or fobs, labelled with a secure site ID (not address)
  • Access codes, stored in our system and only viewable during service windows
  • Instructions for on-site security or signing-in procedures

If a service visit is attempted but access is not available, an access issues will be reported through the app, and notification sent to the client via email (this is the same for partial access). This will still be classed as a completed service visit and will be chargeable at the standard service rate for the site.

What about weekends, bank holidays and public holidays?

Our service is unaffected by weekends, bank holidays and public holidays.

Our service is available for the full duration of the winter season, irrespective of holidays etc.

What sectors do you work with?

We work with a wide range of sectors including retail, logistics, healthcare, education, local authorities, government sites, property management companies, housing associations, and heritage organisations.
