Frequently Asked Questions

How does your weather forecasting service work?

We partner with the Met Office to provide postcode-specific road surface temperature forecasts for each of your sites. Forecasts are reviewed daily from 1 October to 30 April, ensuring proactive action before ice or snow has the chance to settle.

What are gritting activation notifications?

When a forecast meets your agreed trigger temperature (typically 0°C), we send an email notification to your nominated contacts by 10:30am. This confirms the gritting service will take place that evening, helping you stay informed and prepared.

What kind of weather data and forecast do you use?

We work in partnership with the Met Office to provide all the daily forecasts for every client site within our portfolio. We use Met Office-provided Road Surface Temperature forecasts, specific to each site. These are more accurate than public weather forecasts because:

  • They measure road surface temperatures, not air temperature
  • They reflect localised site conditions like exposure, shading, and surface material
  • They update hourly, ensuring near real-time accuracy

The forecast is sent directly to our Ice Master system and provides the forecast for RST on an hourly basis from 12.00pm that day to 11.00am the following day. All sites are allocated a specific forecast point and if the Road Surface Temperature is breached, service will be activated.

Why is your forecast different to the one I use?

Consumer weather apps show air temperature, recorded 1.5m above ground. Ice, however, forms at surface level. That’s why we use Road Surface Temperature data – it reflects the actual freezing risk to your site.

One of the major differences between the forecast we receive each day and the forecasts available on consumer weather apps is the where the temperatures are forecast from. We only use Road Surface Temperature forecasts to activate sites as they are specific to ice formation on the ground and are susceptible to other factors (sun intensity, ground warmth etc).

Consumer weather apps show air temperatures, which are recorded at about 6 feet from the ground and may not reflect the actual conditions on the hard landscaped areas of the site, where ice may form at surface level.

Road Surface Temperature forecasts are very specific and specifically reflect the actual freezing risk to your site.

Can I cancel a service if the forecast changes?

Yes. You can cancel a scheduled gritting activation by 2.00pm on the day if conditions have changed, giving you complete flexibility and control over your winter maintenance schedule.

How does monitoring help reduce costs?

Accurate winter weather monitoring ensures gritting and snow clearance only take place when genuinely needed. This reduces unnecessary visits without compromising safety, helping keep your budgets under control.

Do you provide updates after the service is complete?

Yes. Once gritting or snow clearance is completed, we send a confirmation notification. You can also access time-stamped job sheets and GPS-tracked records through our Ice Master portal for full transparency.

Can I access live weather and service data myself?

Absolutely. Our Ice Master portal gives you real-time visibility of forecasts, service activations, and completed works across all your sites. You can also request or cancel services directly.

What types of sites benefit most from this service?

Any site with safety-critical areas – such as retail car parks, access roads, pedestrian walkways, or logistics hubs – can benefit from proactive snow and ice monitoring services to reduce risk and maintain operations.
