News Improving Biodiversity Across London’s Rooftop Gardens Date: 23rd October 2026 Share: Nurture Group is enhancing four London roof terraces through targeted horticultural improvements, helping to support urban wildlife and build more resilient green spaces. Following a review informed by the 2023 London Wildlife Trust ecology survey, Landscape Manager Mark Soanes and his team have been focusing on plant diversity, soil health and creating better habitats. Enhancing Rooftop 1 Before After Pollinator-friendly planting was introduced to increase plant diversity and improve the terrace’s value for wildlife, while retaining all existing plants. New species included echinacea, alliums and rudbeckia, adding colour and variety to the space. Mulch was also added to help retain soil moisture and provide shelter for invertebrates. Increased insect activity has since been observed, and a robin nest box was installed in June 2026 ahead of the 2027 nesting season. Enhancing Rooftop 2’s wildflower habitat Nurture has been expanding the wildflower habitat after much of the original meadow was lost through short-mown lawn management. The team have introduced mulching to improve soil conditions and varied mowing heights to create a wider range of habitats for insects and other invertebrates. Plans have also been approved for 7,400 native and naturalised bulbs, providing an additional food source for pollinators in late winter and spring, alongside seasonal colour for occupiers and visitors. Maintaining established rooftop gardens Rooftop 3 Rooftop 4 The focus on Rooftops 3 and 4 is maintaining healthy, established planting and improving its resilience over time. Mulching is helping to retain moisture, support soil health and provide habitat for invertebrates. Regular plant division will also help prevent overcrowding and maintain healthy growth. At Rooftop 4, plans include installing three bird boxes and improving the rooftop pond habitat by allowing more sunlight to reach the water, creating better conditions for aquatic insects and other invertebrates. The introduction of mycorrhizal fungi is also planned across both terraces to support soil health and plant establishment. Supporting nature in urban spaces Further improvements include plans for bird boxes, additional water sources for wildlife and soil treatments to support plant health. Together, these measures show how thoughtful horticultural management can help urban green spaces provide greater value for biodiversity.
