Frequently Asked Questions

What is client liability protection in winter maintenance?

It’s the combination of proactive gritting, snow clearance, and detailed service documentation designed to help you meet your duty of care, reduce safety risks, and safeguard your business from potential legal claims.

How does Nurture Winter Gritting help reduce slip and fall claims?

By delivering timely winter services and providing time-stamped, GPS-tracked service records, we can demonstrate that you’ve taken reasonable steps to prevent accidents, helping to mitigate the risk of personal injury claims.

Does this service help with legal compliance?

Yes. Our approach supports your duty of care to staff, customers, and the public, reinforces your internal health and safety protocols, and strengthens your overall risk management strategy.

Is your liability protection backed by insurance?

Yes. All Nurture Winter Gritting services are supported by industry-leading liability insurance, giving you additional peace of mind and financial protection.

Can this service be customised to my site?

Absolutely. We conduct site-specific risk assessments before the season begins, ensuring your service is tailored to your operational, safety, and compliance needs.

Who uses your liability protection services?

We work with facilities managers, property managers, retailers, logistics companies, healthcare providers, education institutions, local authorities, and other organisations that have a legal and operational responsibility to keep sites safe in winter.

Can I do nothing and not grit my sies, as challenging winter weather condition such as ice and snow could be considered an act of god or an event out of my control?

Many years ago it was considered that if you attempted to remove ice or snow, you would become liable if there was an incident. Nowadays, with the HSE guidance in place and the approved code of practice for the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 says: “Arrangements should be made to minimise risks from snow and ice which may involve gritting, snow clearing and closure of some routes, particularly outside stairs, ladders and walkways on roofs.”

If nothing was done to prevent a slip, trip or fall due to ice or snow, there may be grounds for a negligence claim.

How does Nurture Winter Gritting help with liability?

Every contracted client receives full liability support. In the event of an incident or claim, we:

  • Provide timestamped service records
  • Supply GPS tracking reports for vehicle movements
  • Offer PDA-captured visit logs for each site
  • Support your legal team or co-defend claims in court, if needed

By using Nurture Winter Gritting, you demonstrate that reasonable and proactive measures were taken to prevent harm – meeting your duty of care obligations.

We provide full winter insurance and will even co-defend a claim in court if required. Although no company can remove liability from the owners of a site or sites, we can help provide protection in the event of a claim. By having the full contracted service in place, our fully auditable processes and procedures help protect liability.

What evidence do you provide after each visit?

Every gritting or snow clearance visit is recorded with a digital job sheet, time-stamped and GPS-verified. These records are accessible through our Ice Master portal and form a defensible audit trail.

How can you prove service was completed?

There are very advanced processes in place for capturing data to record service completion. Each operator is assigned a mobile app which details the records and data for each completed service visit.

This data is uploaded onto our Ice Master system and is made available for a minimum of seven years. In addition to the data captured by the app and the Ice Master system, each vehicle is also fitted with GPS tracker system that records every second of movement by that vehicle during each visit. This means we can provide proof of service at an almost granular level.

How long is service data retained?

We retain all service data for a minimum of seven years, stored securely in our Ice Master system.

Is salt a guaranteed solution to eliminate ice?

Salt is highly effective, but it has limits:

  • It becomes less effective below -5°C and ceases to work under -10°C
  • Heavy rainfall or snowfall can dilute or wash away salt
  • Areas with high footfall or drainage may need more frequent treatment

In extreme conditions, a second visit or snow clearance may be required. Our team is always available to respond.
