Frequently Asked Questions

What does your winter maintenance service include?

Our winter maintenance service covers proactive gritting, snow clearance and site-specific winter risk management. We treat agreed areas such as car parks, walkways, access roads, and loading bays, ensuring your site remains safe, compliant, and operational throughout the winter season.

How do you decide when gritting is required?

We use postcode-specific Met Office road surface temperature forecasts to trigger gritting when temperatures are predicted to reach the agreed threshold (typically 0°C). This ensures we grit only when necessary, helping to maintain safety while keeping costs under control.

Can you provide winter services for multiple sites across the UK?

Yes. We operate from over 90+ depots nationwide and have a fleet of more than 750 specialist vehicles, making us one of the UK’s largest winter gritting companies. Whether you have one site or a multi-site portfolio, we provide the same high standard of service.

How will I know my site has been treated?

Every visit is fully documented with a time-stamped job sheet and GPS-tracked service confirmation, accessible through our Ice Master portal. This provides a clear audit trail and supports compliance with your duty of care.

What type of salt do you use for gritting?

We use 100% white marine salt as standard for our winter maintenance services and is the preferred product in commercial environments because it:

  • Leaves no dirty residue indoors
  • Dissolves quickly and evenly
  • Is a sustainable product

We can also supply environmentally friendly and specialist alternatives on request – ideal for infrastructure-sensitive areas like upper-level car parks, mezzanines, or heritage surfaces.

Why do you only use salt for gritting?

We use salt for gritting because it is a highly effective, reliable, and widely proven method for preventing ice formation and keeping surfaces safe in winter. It is cost-efficient, readily available, and, when applied correctly, provides consistent results while supporting compliance with health and safety obligations.

How much salt do you apply?

Our calibrated spreaders apply between 20g and 40g of salt per square metre, depending on forecast severity. After rain or light snow, we increase the rate to ensure maximum site safety.

How does salt work to prevent ice?

Salt works by lowering the freezing temperature of water. It absorbs moisture and creates a brine solution, which helps stop ice from forming. Salt becomes more effective once crushed – increasing its surface area and moisture absorption. Pedestrian or vehicle movement after spreading enhances performance. However, salt does not generate heat, so in certain conditions, frost, ice, or snow may still settle despite treatment.

What areas of our site would you cover?

We will create and agree with the client a ‘gritting plan’. This is a mapped area using our professional mapping software which will visually detail all areas that require service. We will service all hard landscaped areas within the boundaries of the site.

Why can’t I see salt on my site after it has been gritted?

Salt is a natural product, and as it at its most effective when dissolved into a brine solution. This brine solution is much less likely to freeze (depending on temperatures). Therefore, especially in damp or wet conditions, the salt will dissolve more quickly and may not be visible on site the following morning. Additionally, is the salt has been crushed, through vehicle or pedestrian traffic, it will be much less visible, even in drier conditions.

Can you tailor winter maintenance to my business needs and budget?

Yes. We offer flexible service plans including cost-per-visit, fixed-cost, or hybrid 50/50 pricing models, so you can choose the level of cover and cost structure that suits your business.

How do your teams access my site?

Our operational teams will provide an overnight service between 6.00pm and 7.00am the following morning. If the site is locked during these times, then arrangements must be made for our teams to access the site. You can provide:

  • Keys or fobs, labelled with a secure site ID (not address)
  • Access codes, stored in our system and only viewable during service windows
  • Instructions for on-site security or signing-in procedures

If a service visit is attempted but access is not available, an access issues will be reported through the app, and notification sent to the client via email (this is the same for partial access). This will still be classed as a completed service visit and will be chargeable at the standard service rate for the site.

What about weekends, bank holidays and public holidays?

Our service is unaffected by weekends, bank holidays and public holidays.

Our service is available for the full duration of the winter season, irrespective of holidays etc.

What sectors do you work with?

We work with a wide range of sectors including retail, logistics, healthcare, education, local authorities, government sites, property management companies, housing associations, and heritage organisations.
