Is your site ready for ice?

When icy conditions arrive, it’s essential to keep your property safe and accessible for visitors. Slips, trips, and falls are common workplace injuries, and the risk increases dramatically during winter months. Failing to take a proactive approach to winter gritting measures can result in accidents, disruptions and various liability issues for your business or organisation.

Prevent accidents and minimise risks

At Nurture Gritting, our salt spreading service is designed to protect your business from the worst of winter. Our tailored approach ensures that your specific site needs are met, and offer:

  • Single and multi-site gritting
  • Car park gritting
  • Multi-storey car parks and external mezzanine floors gritting
  • Gritting service plans
  • Snow removal

We know one size doesn’t fit all that’s why our gritting plans come with the following service options:

  • Cost Per Visit (CPV) – pay for each visit as and when it is required. At the end of each month an invoice will be produced based on the number of gritting visits completed.
  • Fixed Cost Contract – The full winter season is covered for our gritting service through an agreed single fixed cost for the winter, regardless of the weather or the number of service activations completed. This allows for firm budgets to put in place and notwithstanding additional service requirements, budgets can be maintained. This contract can be offered for a minimum of two winters.
  • 50/50 Price - this pricing structure has been specifically designed to create a win-win situation for both parties by sharing the risk of a winter season. The full fixed cost price is divided by 50% and is payable at the start of the season (in line with a fixed cost contract) then each service visit completed is only billed at 50% of the base Cost Per Visit price (CPV).

Whether you manage one site or multiple locations, we tailor our services to meet your specific needs and provide a complete risk management solution. From accurate forecasting to real-time updates, our Nurture Gritting team will ensure that your site stays safe and will operate seamlessly without disruptions.

1 Tell us about your requirements and we’ll get back to you promptly.
2 Gritting plans are created for every site for pricing and operational purposes. Once the proposal is accepted, the plan is uploaded to Ice Master, where it will guide operators to ensure the correct areas are serviced.
3 When temperatures reach a pre-determined level, you'll receive an email notification. Your site will be automatically gritted without requiring prior authorisation. Upon completion, the system will record the date, time, and GPS location of the service. This data will be accessible through our Ice Master Web Portal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the trigger point for gritting?

Our services are triggered by daily Road Surface Temperature (RST) forecasts, provided by The Met Office, during the winter season. Each morning, we upload the forecast data to our custom service activation software. If the RST is forecasted to be at or below zero degrees and the risk threshold is met, the system automatically schedules service for those sites.

This approach ensures that your site stays protected while minimising unnecessary gritting. We only service your site when it is genuinely needed, helping to reduce both the number of visits and overall costs.

Where will you grit?

We will create and agree on a gritting plan with you, utilising professional mapping software to outline all areas that require service. We will cover all hard landscaped areas within the site boundaries, including roads, car parks, service yards, and pedestrian walkways.

What salt will you use?

We only use white marine salt as this is a superior product to the council’s brown salt as well as being a renewable product. It will not leave ‘dirt’ in lobby floors or damage internal mats and is now the preferred choice within the commercial sectors. We can also provide a choice of low corrosive salt or soluble options for your bespoke needs.

When will I know when my site is scheduled to be gritted?

Our Ice Master system will activate the service and send an email to the designated contacts, informing you that gritting is scheduled for that evening. Our team will distribute salt across at-risk areas, preventing ice formation and snow buildup to ensure safer conditions.

If there are specific dates when service won't be needed, such as over the Christmas and New Year period, we can add them to our Ice Master system to automatically suspend service during those times. This option is tailored on a site-by-site basis, rather than for your entire portfolio, ensuring flexibility for your needs.

How can I check if my property was gritted?

You will receive a confirmation email the morning after the service is completed. We also have advanced processes in place for capturing service data. Our operators use PDAs to record service details, which are then stored in our Ice Master system for at least 7 years. Additionally, each gritting vehicle is equipped with a HD GPS tracker system that records every second of movement by that vehicle during each visit.

How long does a gritting visit take?

The duration of a visit depends on the size and complexity of the site, as well as any manual gritting requirements. Gritting vehicles also vary in their spreading width and rate, which are adjusted based on the weather forecast. Salt is applied at appropriate levels depending on the severity of the conditions, ranging from 20gsm for light ice to 40gsm for higher-risk scenarios, such as after rainfall or snow. Our team can provide specific timing estimates based on your site’s unique needs.

How does your liability cover work?

We provide every contracted site with full liability protection.

This means that in the event of a claim, not only do we have all the processes, procedures and technology, we also have the most comprehensive winter specific insurances in place to protect you, your site and your employees/visitors.

In the event of a claim against you, we will fully manage and co-defend the claim if required, including provision of all back-up information from our fully audited systems.

If there is an alleged failure in service, we can clearly demonstrate that you have met all your Duty of Care responsibilities by employing Nurture Gritting as your professional winter service company.

Can you supply and fill salt bins?

Yes, in addition to our comprehensive site service, Nurture can supply salt and grit bins directly to your location, ensuring even better site protection. We offer:

  • Direct delivery to your site(s)
  • Protection for overlooked areas like fire escapes and balconies
  • Fast turnaround—pricing confirmed within two working days of your request
  • A convenient bin refill service to keep you fully stocked throughout the winter
Can it get too cold for salt to work?

Yes, salt remains effective for melting ice down to about -5°C. Below this temperature, its effectiveness gradually decreases as the temperature drops further. By around -8°C, salt becomes almost completely ineffective, staying inactive until the temperature rises enough for the chemical process to restart.

Will you always be able to see the salt we’ve spread?

After a few hours, the salt we’ve spread may not be visible on the ground. Keep in mind that salt needs to dissolve into a solution to work effectively. This means it will nearly disappear as it dissolves, but it’s still functioning as intended. In wetter conditions or areas with heavy traffic, the salt dissolves more quickly compared to drier or less frequently used areas.

Don't wait for the first frost.
