Because of the diversity of tree species and the various reasons for pruning, our skilled arborists offer pruning services throughout the year. This is tailored to the unique needs of each tree species since pruning at the wrong time of the year or cutting too much can hurt tree’s health, stunt its growth, and leave it looking unattractive.

- When is it necessary to prune a tree? How to know when trees need surgery or maintenance?
Tree pruning may be required for several reasons:
- Interference with wires, building, gutters, roofs, chimney, windows or other trees
- Dead or weak branches posing a hazard
- Treatment of diseased or insect-infested branches
- Reducing wind resistance and storm damage risk
- Promoting new growth
- Reducing tree height or lifting the crown
- Treating young trees to ensure proper development
- Improving overall shape or silhouette
- What is the difference between crown thinning and crown reduction?
Crown reduction focuses on reducing the tree's size whilst crown thinning emphasises improving light and air flow within the crown.
Crown reduction is a means for making the crown of the tree dimensionally smaller. This is usually carried out when a tree has grown larger than the space permitted on the site. Live branches are removed to lower the height of the spread of the crown. The branches are all be cut back to suitable pruning points. This allows the tree to cope with the foliage loss correctly and prevents excessive shooting further back in the canopy.
Thinning the crown involves selecting and removing a proportion of the branches from within the crown. This lets more light through the crown, creating a dappled shade underneath helping understory planting that may be struggling beneath the canopy.
- My tree is covered by a Tree Preservation Order, or I live in a conservation area, can I still reduce my tree?
If your tree is in a conservation area or has a Tree Preservation Order (TPO), you'll need to apply to the local council for permission to have works carried out. The council may limit the extent of pruning to maintain the tree's overall appearance.
Gristwood & Toms can handle the application process for you if you choose to proceed with our quotation.
